I understood changing my school and job title after being in one place for 20 years was going to be a challenge, however, I was unprepared for what lay ahead. As I entered my new classroom this summer, I saw stacks of workbooks, piles of worksheets, outdated materials, and a typical desk/chair set up. I quickly realized I did not want my Reading Intervention classroom to look like a traditional classroom but wanted to offer a different experience for my students. I found in my previous years in Kindergarten that students love flexible seating and can be highly engaged with a variety of seating choices. I want to offer flexible seating to my small groups to engage their minds, make their bodies feel comfortable, and to meet their needs in a safe environment. I want to offer wobbly seats to stimulate their minds as well as addressing sensory needs. I feel that bean bags are the perfect compliment to a wonderful book. If a child prefers a traditional seat or the ground, I have found that wiggly cushions can be a nice buffer. It is my hope to increase their reading ability by simply improving their attitude towards reading. My own son is a struggling reading and he is most engaged when comfortable or provided an outlet for his sensory needs. I feel flexible seating is the key to providing this amazing learning experience for my students!
