When I think about creating a classroom community it all begins at the carpet. The carpet ties the classroom together and is the first place relationships are built in, and now out of, the classroom. We have morning meeting on the carpet, play games on the carpet, and learn about each other on the carpet. It is a place for students to be heard and to listen to their peers, whether that be about their lives or academic topics. With this year being online, I would like to give my students some semblance of normalcy with a classroom carpet. I will film most of my lessons on the carpet and make it a part of my virtual classroom. Additionally, it gives students something to look forward to if we come back. In first grade, we don't spend a lot of time at desks or tables, there's always moving or sitting at the carpet so I know having a traditional classroom carpet, even during virtual learning, will help the students feel more comfortable with online school. The color coded spots will also make classroom management easier for both me and the students. Each student will have their individual square, this assignment will be flexible and times for choice seating will be frequent. This carpet has more spots than I have students so students who need more space will have extra space. Additionally, I love this carpet because sequencing is a big learning objective in first grade and with the color coded squares in rows I can see myself doing so many sequencing activities on the carpet. This would give students the chance to move their bodies and have clear organization for sequencing activities. This carpet is incredibly versatile and a great source of comfort for a lot of my students.
