  • Don't Cramp My Style, "Periodt"!

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

My students LOVE to shop the period cabinet! Aside from the Hershey's I added, The most loved item is the heart-shaped heating patch. It gives them that added bit of dopamine which helps their emotional regulation. I will need to restock those soon. My caseload of students spans 9th through 12th grade, so hundreds of students have access to the period products. These products are an extension of learning and have helped me reach my goal of curbing period poverty and promoting period education. Many of my students are coming to me when they start their period at school. They come to get emergency supplies and often ask if they can take more for the coming days. This shows me how helpful these resources are for some of these girls. Having these on hand truly supplies an essential need.

My girls also bring in their friends and teach them how to prepare for their period. They show them the cabinet, explain which period products we have, and make suggestions about what and how much they should take with them. This cabinet has provided a leadership opportunity for my students; one that allows them to support their community and share resources. So, not only are they learning about managing their cycle, and focusing on learning after a 'period emergency'; but, they are also practicing outreach and philanthropy. Our next step is to continue to make sure that all those in our circle of influence have access to the supplies and knowledge that they need to manage their monthly cycle.

Thank you so much for making this goal a reality!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carroll

  • Extra! Extra! Hear All About It!

    Funded Jan 31, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation to our project! These apps and apparatuses provided students with equitable access to content as well as the tools to respond to it. Students who struggled to read and write in a language other than their own blossomed when these tools were made available. Mote is one of the most helpful tech tools for language learners; it allows students to listen to, respond to, and translate a prompt, question, or statement. It also allows teachers to listen to the student's response, translate it, and respond to the student in any language knowing that their student can easily translate their feedback later. Mote made it possible for students to respond verbally and allowed all of their teachers, including me, to understand their responses with its built-in translation.

More importantly, the more students used the tech, the more confident they became in their abilities and in trying new things. Many students were completely disengaged from learning because they felt that they would not be able to do the work or participate in activities because of the language barrier. These tools were integral to breaking the ice and meeting students where they were to help them achieve. The students using these tools made progress over time. They began to engage in content, and then into classroom activities. In fact, by the end of the year, students were willing to try to translate on their own, were more confident responding in writing and verbally, and were more intrinsically motivated to approach content and class participation than they were previously.

It has been exciting to see the transformation in student's sense of belonging, confidence, and engagement. What they've gained from these simple tools is so much more than access to content. They have gained a newfound perspective on what they are capable of and more. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating to this special project! Your support has made a world of difference to my students' social-emotional well-being and education.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carroll

  • ¿Cómo Se Dice Representation and Belonging? ¡Justicia Lingüística!

    Funded Oct 10, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation to our project! These new texts provided students a window to new perspectives about the human experience, words to add to their lexicons, and relevant representative stories. These books are displayed prominently on my desk and students can select them during open choice reading. I have seen students who do not like school or reading, come up and grab a book and read because it piqued their interest and was in a language other than English.

These texts have served many wonderful and sometimes unexpected purposes in my classroom. For example, everyone enjoyed using the bilingual picture dictionary. Students acquiring English or Spanish used its pages to find vocabulary to help them articulate their thoughts. A favorite page for my students was the digital literacy page. Students built their capacity to follow or give tech directions in Spanish and English. I learned along with students', including terminology that helped me communicate tech information with families. This section alone inspired the creation of structured activities that promote translanguaging in our class.

These books have added to the landscape of our culture and identity learning that my students engage in through texts. Students in my class consider books a mirror, a window, and a sliding glass door. They ask themselves, "What can I identify with or do I see my identity represented in this text?", "what have I learned about the human experience or empathy for others in this text?", and "What familiar or new experience have I walked in as a reader of this text?" When students asked themselves these questions with a widened landscape of textual experiences, identities, and languages, there was a dramatic increase in student engagement.

I was so inspired by their responses to the text and the new learning we engaged in, I am looking forward to diversifying my classroom library even further to represent more languages and experiences soon. Thank you again for your support!”

  • Droplets Like It's Hot!

    Funded Jan 31, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation! The hydration station is the most loved addition to our classroom. These resources have provided us with so many benefits. Because we can access hot water, we can make hot chocolate and tea on cold days. Having these resources has been so nice because we can curb hunger during our afternoon tutoring and Saturday school sessions. We use the hot water to make noodles. The students love this!!! When our students can take care of that basic need, they are so much more energized and ready to work.

When they first saw the new hydration station they all exclaimed, "Let's go!!!" Students were literally jumping for joy and wanted to use it right away.

We are so thank full for your support in making our hydration station a reality! This small gesture is helping us to attract students to tutoring and study hall, which has had a tremendous effect on their academics. Thank you for your continued support of our classroom!”

  • Support You Can See: Learning on the Walls!

    Funded Dec 1, 2021

Your donation to "Learning on the Walls" has helped my students get organized and access ready support materials. Every quarter, we used our giant calandra to plan for upcoming events and deadlines. The clear plastic sleeves and acrylic sign holders housed important school information, club announcements, and flyers. And, the literature rack housed English Language Arts handouts supporting students with aspects of the reading and writing process. The binders that we used became a staple in the classroom that helped students prioritize their workload-they also has fun personalizing the covers with pictures and stickers. Also, having access to readings and mini lessons on the walls made it easy for students to grab what they need and work independently. We thank you for supporting our lab.”

  • Starving Artists Hungry for Supplies!

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Wow!! It's been such a busy year that has seemed to fly by. My class and I want to be sure that you know how appreciative we are of your generous donations!! My students loved the art supplies. It was a great way to get them offline and engaging in hands-on art. It was great to be able to supply students with materials that could be used throughout the school year on various projects. They were surprised to see me at their door step with a packet of new art supplies. They have used these supplies for several projects including a water color eye painting about life from their perspective right now; a Harlem Renaissance Inspired Art Piece during Black History Month; and most recently art therapy activities!!! We thank you to the moon and back for your donation, it meant a lot!!”
