Presenting students opportunities to learn different instruments throughout their music education has the potential to create life-long musicians. What better way to do this than through their elementary music education when they are learning the foundations of how to read, feel, and understand music! With a classroom set of ukuleles, my students will be able to not only apply their musical knowledge and skills, but they'll also be able to connect with their classmates in a way they haven't before. This will be the first time that my elementary students will have the materials needed to make music as an instrumental ensemble, rather than just a vocal ensemble. They will get to play the music they hear on the radio, at concerts, and their own compositions! I am confident that my students will gain invaluable experiences through learning the ukulele with their classmates, especially during the unprecedented times of COVID-19. They will have the chance to connect with their friends, family, the community, and most importantly, themselves.
