A Book a Day Keeps the Sadness Away
Funded Dec 22, 2023Our class project A Book a Day Keeps the Sadness Away materials arrived in January. The boxes were delivered to our classroom at the end of the school day as the children were leaving. The next day the children helped me unpack some of the boxes. It warmed my heart to see the smiles on their faces as we began to take all the books and games out.
Several of the students immediately ran over to the bookshelf to see all the new books. "Wow I am that boy in that book", said one of my students. Another student said" that daddy looks like C's dad".
Reading books .Just like Your Daddy, Grumpy Monkey, and I Am Amazing! to name a few, have such a positive impact on our students. Each time we read these stories my students are engaged.
This school year we are really focused on promoting positive interactions among children by increasing their social and emotional skills. All the materials such as the puppets, PP OPOUNT Social Emotional Learning Toy, Funny Faces Games with 28 Facial Expressions and 12 Emotional Flashcards, have encouraged our students to share, use power words and to stop and think.
All the toys and games donated encouraged and supported cooperatively play, turn taking, problem solving and critical thinking skills. As we continue to prepare our students to transition to kindergarten next school year. Thanks to the support of donor's students can continue to explore the puzzles, number bots, the number and color sorting and all the other materials.
The puppets have been especially helpful. We have used them to teach letter recognition. The students have used the puppets to practice skills such as turn taking and calming down. We appreciate all that you have done to make this school year fun, engaging a meaningful for our students. Thank you for funding our project. Our preschoolers enjoyed all the fun hands-on materials and learning games. As they continued to interact with their friends our classroom is a better place because of your generosity.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 15 other donors."Social Skills Learning Through Play"
Funded Nov 23, 2020On behalf of our students and their families we thank you for your donations. Our students were very excited to use the materials such as the workbooks, manipulative blocks and especially the puppets.
When my student's first saw the puppets they immediately smiled and held the puppets up to the screen. Each of our students named their puppets and several of the students named their puppets after themselves. The students reaction to the life like puppets warmed my heart. Their instant connection to the puppets really helped with getting the students excited for the social skills activities.
Students use the puppets during our mindful moments to help with calming down. Additionally, the students have used the puppets during story time. Our next step is to continue to use the puppets and other materials to help the students express how they feel through our weekly social development activities.
Students will learn more about feelings such as frustrated, disappointed and what to do when they have these feelings. Students will use the puppets to roll play and practice the calm down and problem-solving steps.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Riddick
