Students at my school have participated in our piano program for many years. They receive instruction in a small group setting of 8 to 10 students. As a piano instructor, I am able to work one on one with each student during the class. Students have many learning and performing experiences through our piano program. We hold an annual piano recital in the spring for all piano students. Some students are selected to perform in other annual performances with the rest of the fine arts classes as well as accompany choir, rock bands and perform at graduation. Remote learning, and eventually, hybrid learning decreases the number of students able to receive equitable music education. I have several students who do not have keyboards at home to practice on and receive remote instruction from me. Additionally, if we move to a hybrid model, students can no longer share pianos like we normally do under Illinois health guidelines. Receiving 8 keyboards will not only allow the students who do not own and/or cannot afford to buy their own keyboard, but it will also help fill in some gaps if we return to a hybrid model with strict health rules. Having a keyboard at home to practice with, even when I am able to teach in person, improves the learning process and allows the students to explore and discover music on their own, at their own pace.
