Extra, Extra! Read All About It!
Funded Dec 6, 2023Thank you so much for your generosity. We have begun receiving the Junior Scholastic magazines and have already put them to good use in our classroom. My students are usually reluctant to read any new items that we give them but the scholastic magazines caught their interest and kept it. Each magazine comes filled with multiple non-fiction articles on many different topics and of varying lengths, which has helped to engage many more of my students in the readings. This has been incredibly helpful as we prepare for the upcoming state exams.
One of the best features of the scholastic magazine is that it includes a debatable topic in each volume, which is where we began. The first debate was all about social media and teens. This completely caught their attention and they very quickly had opinions that they wanted to share. After reading, we held our own class debate the entire class participated. This was an amazing site to see, particularly with my ENL class (English Language Learners). After this initial use of the magazine, we have now made it part of our class routine and read articles every Friday. My students are excited to receive the magazine every month and choose the articles that we will read together. Several students have even approached me to say that they like magazine and that the articles are interesting. That is the best part for me. Usually, any suggestions I give for reading is meet with groans but now my students make sure I don't forget about our readings on Fridays.
Thank you again for helping to get my students interested in reading.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Santiago
