Having a diverse set of picture books to be able to read aloud to my students is essential. My students need to be able to see themselves in the books that we are reading. Having diverse read alouds and diverse classroom library books will not only allow my students to see themselves in these books, but it will help them learn about people of various identities and backgrounds. I believe that this will also help my students build a love of reading.
My students don't have access to many physical books at home. During remote learning, it is vital that my students are keeping with their reading by reading during school and after school. In order to do this, my students need physical books to read so they can increase their reading abilities. My students do most of their reading online since many of them don't have books at home. They already spend most of their day on the screen. Getting the opportunity to read physical books will shorten the amount of time my student spend on the screen.
Many of my students are low level readers and it is vital for them to have access to books that are at their reading level. I have a few students who are beginning readers and it is so important that they are reading every day. In order to do that, they NEED books! I will be sending leveled books home for my students to borrow during remote learning. They will also have access to these books when we return to school.
