I am a teacher in a high-poverty district. Our school has 1-1 Chromebooks for students. Each student is issued a computer by the district. With that computer comes a single set of absolutely awful headphones. The district-issued headphones break very easily; many times they are broken when they come out of the bag. They have terrible audio. In addition, we are a middle school - things get lost! The kids are 11, 12, and 13 and naturally will lose their headphones from time-to-time. As a teacher, having a class-set of headphones would allow me to focus on learning instead of logistics. We waste far too much of class time problem-solving for students when they do not have headphones. I and my students resort to running around asking for spare sets, sharing, or just resorting to class activities that don't utilize headphones (which greatly limits our tech opportunities in this digital age). Our school does NOT have many sets of replacement headphones (literally they have like 20, our population is 800) and therefore the office and library essentially horde and ration the spare sets. This is an EQUITY ISSUE. My students opportunities are not the same as in more affluent districts where headphones are abundantly available! In addition, students with special education requirements often need access to text-to-speech. Will you please help level the playing field by helping us purchase a class set for my kids? Please know I will still be able to use and track this class set during distance learning/Covid, so this project is just as important now than ever. Thank you!
