  • Hear Ye! Hear Ye! We Need Headphones Please!

    Funded Aug 18, 2024

Thank you so much for our generosity in providing headphones for our students. Each day, students spend time on their chrome book in math and literacy learning that compliments what they're learning in class. When every student has a pair of working headphones, it makes that part of our day run so much more smoothly!

In the past, there is has been so much time wasted trying to find headphones and make sure they're working. Students were so excited to each receive a new pair of headphones. Now when it's time to use our chrome books, students are excited to grab their headphones and get right to work.

Your generosity took something that was a challenge and has made our computer time run so much more smoothly.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Developing Good Reading Skills

    Funded Oct 22, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity, and helping provide decodable books for students. It is so important for students to have books where they can practice their decoding skills with the spelling patterns we are learning.

These books each contain a different spelling pattern. It gives students opportunities for targeted practice, to build their skills and feel successful.

Initially, these books are used in small group instruction. Once students become more proficient in the spelling pattern, the books are shared with reading partners and families. I find students choosing these books again and again.”

  • Can You Hear Me Now? We Need Headphones, Please!

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donation that helped my students receive new headphones. In modern day classrooms, online learning is an important component. Our district provides headphones but they are very cheaply made and break right away. It creates issues with working headphones all year long.

With your help, we were able to purchase headphones that are better quality and will last all year. All students have the same headphones so there are no arguments and everyone is able to access their online learning.

This is not something that I could have purchased without your help so thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

  • Free of Distractions and Ready to Focus

    Funded May 23, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity in donating to our classroom. We are using the plastic organizers on tables and it has made keeping supplies so much easier. Each student has one spot to put pencils and scissors instead of searching through cubbies.

We also received office dividers. Students love using them and frequently ask if they can get them out. Not only do they keep answers private, they also allow students to work without distractions. First grade classrooms can be busy places but offices allow them to stay on task.

Thank you again for your generosity. We are off to a great start this school year and your generosity has helped it be a flawless beginning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Decodable Books for Reading Success!

    Funded Apr 8, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity in purchasing these decodable books for our class. As new readers, it's often difficult to find books that first graders can read independently. They are learning new phonics patterns every week and these books are a great way to reinforce what they're learning. Students get so excited when the phonics pattern they're learning in class also shows up in the books they're reading.

These books also have very simple pictures so students are not tempted to look at the picture and try to guess the word. They have to rely on the letter sounds and blend the word. This creates good reading habits.

I can use these books in my small groups with students and students will also use them to read with our 4th grade reading buddies and with their families.

There's nothing better than seeing a light go on in a child's eyes when they realize they CAN READ! It's the best feeling.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Cracking the Code with Decodable Books!

    Funded Dec 28, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity. These books are changing the way students in my classroom learn to read. We practice different phonics patterns every week and these books have those same phonics patterns. The phonics patterns are reinforced and learned by using decodable books.

Students read the books with partners, to me and to our 4th grade reading buddies. However, one of their favorite places to take our decodable readers is home to read with their families. I've had parents send me notes thanking me for sending the books and expressing their excitement that their child is reading. Students quickly return the books so they can take another the following week to share.

Thank you for investing in the future of these students and helping build their reading skills that will benefit them for their entire life.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Love Literacy with Decodable Books!

    Funded Dec 23, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity in helping purchase these books. We have a new phonics curriculum and these books allow students to practice those spelling patterns. They love to share the books with each other and their families.

These books have solidified the spelling patterns we are learning and built their confidence. As students read, they get so excited when the realize the books are using the same spelling patterns that we are learning in our phonics lessons.

Students read the books with me in our small group and take them to read with our 4th grade reading buddies. Thank you so much for investing in their futures!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Ah-Choo! Tissues And Other Supplies

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

Thank you so much for your support of our classroom. You helped to provide basic supplies so students could have what they needed to learn. We keep baskets with erasers, glue sticks and pencils so students can go get what they need whenever they need it.

Frequently time is spent with conflicts over supplies or trying to share but this year, supplies have not been an issue. Students have what they need and I thank you for that.

I have also enjoyed having a supply of baggies and tissues. In the past, I was always asking parents to send things but parents are not always able to do so. I know they also appreciate not sending extra things and I appreciate having what we need.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

  • Make Math Fun

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

These math games are making our math learning so much fun. Students love to play the dominoes games and don't realize they're cementing foundational math skills that are going to help them on their journey through school. As soon as the boxes arrived, they were begging to play.

In 1st grade, addition and subtraction are two of our primary math objectives. Once students learn various strategies, they need to practice. These domino math games are a favorite way for students to do that. The games are sometimes used whole class. It's great to have so many games so everyone can play. The math domino games are also a frequent choice when students have free time.

Your donation is making a difference for these students.”

  • Shh.. First Graders Are Learning Phonics Secrets!

    Funded Sep 16, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting our class and allowing me to purchase Secret Stories. Secret Stories are a set of 36 posters that have a picture clue that relates to a story that helps students remember a phonics pattern. The story and picture gives students a multisensory explanation for letter-sound behavior.

When I first introduced the posters, students immediately started recognizing letter groupings in their name. One of the first posters we discussed was for the /ar/ sound because I have students with names like Carlos, Carter and Jamarion who found the secret in their names.

A student noticed the calendar month of November so I told them the 'secret' (story) for the /er/ sound. The story that goes along with the /er/ sound involves a car slamming on their brakes so we make the /er/ sound and use our foot to hit the brake. Soon after, we encountered the word 'her' in a book and the girl who read it said the /h/ sound and then made the brakes sound for /er/ so I knew it was the story that helped her to remember the sound. In first grade, that sound isn't normally introduced until spring but Secret Stories gave her the knowledge of that sound when she needed it.

I've been teaching first grade for 18 years and this is the best resource I've ever used in the classroom. Students beg to hear stories and frequently point out the spelling patterns and story when we see them in books. It has made their learning fun and engaging. I'm excited to see their progress throughout the rest of first grade.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thompson

While we are fortunate to have chromebooks for students, we need headphones to help students hear, block distractions and do their best in online learning. In the days of Covid, students cannot safely share headphones. Individual headphones will allow each student to stay focused on their work in a more sanitary way. All students in my class will be doing either some or all online learning. I want to provide a pair of headphones for each student so parents have one less thing they need to worry about paying for.
