The many books in this collection are all about bugs, but they have been specially selected to provide many different learning activities around this theme. Some books, like Microsculpture: Portraits of Insects by Levon Biss and A World of Butterflies, are at a more adult reading level but provide large, vibrant, real life pictures of insects and butterflies. These books will be used as inspiration for students' own insect art works. Other books, like the many National Geographic books in this collection, are at a first grade reading level and will provide not only high interest reading practice but also the opportunity to engage in learning in nonfiction texts. There are also fiction books like Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Grouchy Ladybug that activate the students' imaginations to create their own pretend insect worlds. Many of the books in the Backyard Book Series will be used not only to engage interested readers but also to create our very own insect research projects. This simple but in depth collection of books will ignite students imagination, spark their interest, and inspire their creativity as we learn about bugs and insects through art, exploration, and research.
