Throughout the past two years I have seen how COVID-19 has affected our students. Having this literature would offer equitable resources for all students by providing quality literature regardless of socio-economic background. Our students have lost two years of traditional education across the board. My students come to my classroom in an important testing year, and due to COVID-19 it has caused them to fall behind academically. We have students who have missed many days of school due to COVID-19, and it causes them to fall further behind. Having books that students can use at home during these absences, would give them the resources they need to achieve classroom objectives while working at home. COVID-19 has had an impact on my kids social and emotional learning also. That is something we have focused on this year. Through our reading, students have been able to connect with characters in the story and search out their own emotions. I think as we walk through the third year of COVID-19 we need to see how this is affecting our students emotions and how we can help guide them through those emotions. I serve my students by teaching 5th grade reading, but I am also there to support and care for all of my students. Quality literature is a tool to help further their understanding and give them something tangible to carry with them, a love of reading.
