My Virtual Whiteboard

With my IPad I can now show a visual representation of my work work while verbally explaining in real time. Before I relied on Youtube videos and other online applications to provide a visual representation of examples problems. Students can now see me do the work while I explain it my way. I downloaded an app called "Explain Everything" which allows me to upload a copy of the assignment and show my work as I work through the problems right on the assignment. I can write on the assignment, save the work and email it to students to view later if they wish. In addition, I have the option to add an audio recording of me explaining as I complete the problems.
My students love that I can show my work much faster than using Google or Microsoft applications and I can use real math symbols without switching between screens and applications. My work is in real time. I can save, download and share my work so students can review the work later.
This IPad has definitely fulfilled my expectation of becoming a Virtual Whiteboard. This has been the closest experience to live in person teaching than any other tools I have used this school year. All of my students noticed the change immediately and have benefited from the new addition. I have much more to learn about using my IPad and I am looking forward to learning and continuing to enhance the classroom experience for my virtual and hybrid students.”

Think back to High School. Do you recall the introduction of letters in math class. Math was so simple before the letters began appearing in the problems. This is the common complaint of my students, however, by using my whiteboard I can easily show my students how to manipulate equations and solve for the variable values. This visual explanation becomes a bit more critical as the level of difficulty in math increases. I have seen success in my PreCalculus class, when I am able to project while working through problems as a class and able to incorporate various colors for visual mapping. In the Spring, when we switched to remote learning, my ability to work through examples was limited by what I could do using MS Word. It led to long wait times and loss of student engagement. The use of an iPad would allow me to write on the tablet as if it were a whiteboard. I could easily change colors, erase and copy, all while presenting my screen to the class. This Virtual Whiteboard would allow me to simulate my in person class environment and increase student engagement.
