  • Mile Chasers

    Funded Aug 27, 2022

Thank you for your generous contribution to our Zapata Mile Chasers after school running club. Each student received a fitness tracker and insulated water bottle which they use twice a week during our meetings. As soon as the students opened their packages they made sure to wash their bottles and charge the fitness trackers. They were eager to start wearing the watches and began comparing the data by showing one another the steps completed since they began wearing their device. They have enjoyed using them and they are truly benefiting from the water bottles as they are able to hydrate themselves with cool water throughout the day. We appreciate your support in launching our first running club at Zapata Academy!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Undda

  • A Binder, A Book, and Brilliance

    Funded Jul 25, 2021

On behalf of my 6th grade Reading group, we want to thank you for your generosity and contribution to our daily reading journey. We are close to finishing our novel study of Efren Divided and will be completing a final project to culminate our reading and writing. Together, students have collaborated on their binder work and have enjoyed this beautifully written story about a middle school student who endures the harsh reality of family separation due to deportation. This book has made us cry and hope for a better tomorrow. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Undda

To launch an upcoming Reading unit, my students will need the novel, Efren Divided by Ernesto Cisneros as well as a binder to collect their reading and writing journey. As the students pause and reflect, ask questions, and connect ideas based upon their reading of the novel, they will use the binder as a tool to help them become more engaged with the text. The author of this novel celebrates the kindness of the Mexican American community and its richness of food, culture, and resilient spirit. My 6th graders will be able to connect with the various themes of the novel as they live in a Mexican-American community known as “La Villita” (Little Village) located on the southwest side of Chicago. Not only have my students endured a pandemic, losing loved ones to COVID-19, but they are surrounded by gun violence and the threat of being separated from family members due to deportation looms over their daily lives. The students in the community that I serve need more and more representations in books written by and about people who they can identify with.
