  • For the Love of Reading

    Funded Dec 25, 2016

Thank you so much for the donations. My students have been enjoying the books. I even have a waiting list for some books, particularly "The 39 Clues" series. My students reading proficiency has increased since they are now reading more books that are to their interests. They are eager to recommend books to their friends and talk about what they have read. The boys have been reading about Muhammad Ali, Roberto Clemente, and the graphic novels. I am positive that in the years to come students will be enthralled by these high interest books. Once again thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

  • Class Library

    Funded Oct 20, 2011

I want to sincerely thank you for donating to the project for a class library. The students will truly enjoy reading these high interest books. The school does not currently have a library so students do not have access to a variety of books. This project will allow me to begin a library with a variety of genres. The Magic Tree House books will not only providing them reading skills, but allow them to make connections with other subject areas such as social studies. Guardians of Ga''Hoole , Goosebumps Horrorland Boxed, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians are books that will maintain their interest through action and adventure. The students will have access to a variety of materials that will aide in comprehension through an array of genres. Your generosity will make an immediate difference in the lives of these students. You are making a difference! Your personal commitment is incredibly helpful. Your donation means so much to me but even more to the students. Thank you from all of us. ”

  • Radical Readers

    Funded Mar 15, 2011

I want to sincerely thank the donors for their support of my project. My students enjoyed the new materials. They were very intrigued by the leveled readers. They enjoyed sharing with each other the materials they were reading. The excitement in the classroom was phenomenal! The students were also able to put into practice several reading strategies with the At My Desk reading Comprehension Strategies. The DK stories were easy to read and understand and students were able to easy figure out the strategies and work independently.

My students have been able to improve their skills as evident from their work samples and tests. These tools are helpful in boosting their self esteem when they are successful and it will carry on to other core classes as well. Reading is beneficial to all subject areas.

Some of my students come to me reading way below their grade level, which can sometimes be at a first to third grade level. These materials helped me give them many different strategies to use which were quick and interesting. At the same time varying the activities to where we worked on 5-6 strategies in one day.

Again thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me bring these materials of interest to the students. These materials will benefit hundreds of students in the years to come. Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Sanchez

The Intensive Reading class that I teach is the lowest level of reading. Students are taught at a third grade level. The majority of the students have learning disabilities and/or English Language Learners. The students come from economically disadvantaged homes. They do not have the resources and support at home to enhance literacy skills. The students cannot take advantage of after school tutoring or the use of the public library due to the lack of proper transportation. Students live too far from local resources to walk. We can help lower the drop out rate by giving these students the skills to pass each grade level and eventually graduate high school. Students who do not pass state standardized test in high school have a higher chance of dropping out. I want to give them the skills and self esteem to succeed.
