With all of the literature students read, how much of it is relevant and relatable? Hopefully some of it, but probably not enough. There are thousands of great stories, poems, and dramas, but do they truly help students with real life? Our students' reality is too often one of racism, discrimination, and fear. Students can easily witness and hear about racism, violence, and police brutality. The topic of racism can be found in literature texts from the past, but does it have the face our students see now? I want to help students discuss the racism they see in today's world, not just from the past. "The Hate U Give" is a novel designed to do just that. Specifically discussing police brutality against African Americans, this book can help students cope with the emotions and worry they may have felt after this summer's events.
