I am a first year teacher looking to fill my classroom with culturally responsive and relevant books. As a new teacher I luckily get many of my books second hand, however, this hasn't resulted in my classroom library to showcase diversity in cultures, languages, and experiences. A majority of my 1st grade students come to me with English as their second language and I am wanting to honor their first language by providing bilingual books and Spanish books to match the English versions I already own. This will aid in the process of learning to read. I am looking to enrich my students' lives through exposure to culturally diverse literature with a focus on inclusivity, acceptance, and kindness. I am also aiming to educate my students about cultural experiences that are different from their own, by including books that differ from their own culture, life experiences, and celebrate all differences positively. Through remote learning I am looking to prioritize read alouds that open up discussions about inclusivity, acceptance, and kindness. There are many additional online resources that the topics of these books discuss which I plan on supplementing with. Please help me do this by funding a more diverse classroom library.
