My 28 kindergarteners are Native Americans who live on a reservation in the state of Nevada. Our school is a public school run by our county school district. Most of the students are economically disadvantaged and receive free lunch. While some come to kindergarten having had pre-school, for many, this is their first exposure to a classroom and the routines that are a part of formal schooling. These little "kittens" come ready to learn and have fun, but need a lot of support in this learning. An environment that is organized, stimulating, and exciting can go a long way to help them be successful in their first experience with learning.
