This Fall, my students will return to school through eLearning, which is not easy for young children who are blind or partially seeing. Lessons taught via computer are virtually inaccessible to this special population of children because they cannot view a computer's screen. In order to access daily lessons, an adult must sit next to the child at home, read what is on the screen out loud if it is not auditory, and type the child's responses to complete assignments. My students need accessible literacy at home in a format they can hold in their hands and explore over and over again. This can happen through the use of teacher-made storybooks written in Braille with tactile pictures to introduce concepts such as the alphabet, numerals, rhyming words, textures, seasons, predictable text, and categorization. Such books will be explored and read together with their Teacher of the Visually Impaired via video calls and shared with their family members. Sighted family members will be able to read the books too because print will be written above the Braille.
