  • Diverse Authors for Diverse Readers

    Funded Aug 24, 2020

within this crazy school year, we have seen lots of change. We have seen change for the good and change for the bad. Within the last couple years, we have seen an increase in diversity and an increase in the demand for more diverse texts within our classrooms. These texts allowed me to teach strategies and lessons about acceptance, bias, ignorance, and many other topics. I was able to teach about historical perspective and living history as well as ideas about inclusion based on ethnicity, race, sexuality, and gender identity.

Reading in my classroom is highly interactive. Students are continuously engaging with each other about what they read and what they think will happen next.

I have quite a few individual students that are forming close bonds with many of these texts especially since now they are able to see themselves in the texts.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Uptegrove

  • 21st Century Literacies: Graphic Novels

    Funded Dec 16, 2020

With the fully funding of this project complete, I want to say thank you so much. This is a welcomed holiday gift. My students will use these this year and years to come. That is one of the great gifts of books. They can be used again and again imparting knowledge to future generations. This is a huge help in the fight for literacy for all.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Uptegrove

  • Black Female Authors

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you so much for your donations. These books will go a long way to helping get diverse literature in front of my students. Our school is lacking in more recent texts especially by women and women of color. These books will help show students they can be characters in great stories.”

    With gratitude,

Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds including a multitude of racial, ethnic, cultural, and economic situations. My students have a passion for reading but need better and more books. In my building we are lacking books written by people like them for people like them. The books purchased with this project will allow them to be seen in a classroom text for the first time. The books will be taken home and used to study other cultures and backgrounds as well. These books will be used in a Workshop Model classroom as well.
