Every year my young preschoolers enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore. As a teacher, I love their inquisitiveness and their eagerness and want to provide them with the best possible opportunity to learn and grow as human beings so that they actively engage in community building throughout their lives. In the age of multiculturalism, books are an essential tool to start the conversation on diversity and ingrain an appreciation and understanding of others. Activities that educate the children about cultures, ethnicity, abilities, and race are an important way to celebrate our differences but also embrace our similarities. I plan on using these books for classroom read-alouds and also as discussion starters to help the children engage in self-exploration and discovery about their other peers. In the past, the children have been very enthusiastic about learning the nuances of various cultural backgrounds and then pointing out the shared traits with themselves. I want to continue providing opportunities for these young minds to be able to learn and appreciate the world around them.
