This is my first year as a STEAM teacher and I will provide hands-on exploration and cross-curricular instruction during STEAM class. Adhering to the physical distancing guidelines established by the CDC, my goal is to put together individual bags of materials for students to utilize when completing "Future Ready" STEAM Challenges. These Challenges will be introduced by myself and our school counselor. We will use virtual resources that will include the awesome IF/THEN videos! These materials I am requesting will also be available for pick-up at our school for those who are choosing to attend school online from their home. Our "Future Ready" STEAM Challenges inspire students' interests in various STEAM careers, allow for mastery of a new skill and promote exploration of a student's innovative ideas. An example of a popular activity is for students to become a design engineer, with a task of building a protocol of a tree house that would provide comfort throughout the entire year in Pennsylvania. It is quite interesting to see how students interpret the word "comfort". Last school year, a 4th grade female use recycled items from the STEAM Lab to develop her rendition of a blanket for her tree house. In the summer months rain water collected on the roof and dripped into the blanket to cool the house. She connected the blanket to rooftop solar panels, providing warmth in the winter. It was fabulous! By providing Future Ready STEAM Challenges, my students are exploring careers at an early age, while developing a sense of curiosity, creativity and ingenuity. Although my STEAM budget has been completely cut, I know that I must provide these items to better develop my students' continued interest in STEAM careers for their successful future.
