During the 2020-2021, my students will be spending at least some portion of the year learning from home. This will be challenging, and students will miss the connections and relationships that are easier to make in person. Reading a powerful book together with strong messages about identity, and family, will help students have a common book to talk about during our online classes. Blended, by Sharon Draper is a book about a young girl who comes from a blended, biracial family. She grapples with growing up with divorced parents, racial identity and issues with class. This book is a great book for rich discussion for my students and covers topics that are so important and timely to my students lives. Besides building community between my students, this book will also be emphasizing literacy skills we will be learning in our reading and writing classes.
