As we enter the school year remotely, we are asking to be able to give each of our students their own set of attribute blocks. ALL our first graders deserve to learn and grow using the most developmentally appropriate materials (in this case, math manipulatives) no matter what their family can provide at this time. Attribute blocks, which vary in shape, size, thickness and color, will provide our students with a robust experience in mastering foundations in geometry. Foundations in geometry are crucial for the mathematical development of primary students. Such understanding helps establish students' spatial ability and logical reasoning skills, thus preparing them for solving complex, real-world problems. In first grade, students are working to observe patterns, recognize and identify shapes, and sort shapes by attributes. These critical skills are precursors to strong conceptual understanding in all areas of mathematics, and begin with the exploration and manipulation of physical objects. With attribute blocks, students will be able to further their love of mathematics at home with effective and engaging hands-on materials.
