Art is area in which all students can be made to feel successful. I encourage students to make their art pieces their own to foster their creativity. They do not have to to make their pieces look exactly like a sample. Using a variety of mediums will allow them to create their ideas beyond the standard, crayons, color pencils, markers, watercolors and copy paper. Art is area in which all students can be made to feel successful. Some students have a natural affinity for art and the new mediums will allow them to hone their skills. Others feel less confident in their abilities and trying a new material will motivate these students to participate and even embellish their pieces. Art can be integrated in all subject areas and can stimulate interest and effort in those subjects. For example, I have students solve real world problems in math with every concept. Students work together to create posters of their work and are encouraged to decorate them making them as interesting and understandable for the class. They present these posters explaining how they solved these problems. Students will want to contribute using the watercolor pencils and pastels. This is also true for reading, social studies and science with illustrating characters, timelines, and biome pamphlets.
