Covid-19 has completely changed speech therapy. We have gone from being totally hands on and face to face; to tele-therapy, digital learning and lessons via social distancing. While this TV we are requesting will not be used for our online learning, we have learned through tele-therapy in the past few months that technology is a necessary part of teaching communication skills. Our current plan is to start out the school year training students how to use our online platforms. This way, our students will be more prepared for a potential school closure. Videos and media show facial expressions and body language that we will not be able to show this year in face to face therapy due to COVID-19 and CDC guidelines. Our student need to see real-life positive and negative examples of communication experiences. Our lesson plans frequently revolve around a youtube clip of a social interaction, or a narrative teaching problem solving, or appropriate social behavior. We often do role-plays, but watching typical peers in video format is more effective in pointing out the negative and positive interactions. We often pause the videos and discuss what went wrong, and what went well. Another purpose for our request, is the ability to hold an IEP meeting in a paperless format via Apple TV Screen sharing. This will reduce the number of paper copies that we need to make, and will allow the IEP team to hold a more efficient meeting. All of these things will improve our ability to provide speech and language services in our school.
