Now that students are back in the classroom, my fellow teachers and I have been searching for ways to help keep them motivated and engaged while also allowing them to be able to stay on track when they are sick or have to stay home. Structuring my course into self-paced lessons has allowed me to give students the flexibility they need while also supporting them in their academic growth. Students in my classroom work through lessons independently at their own pace, which allows me to check in with students individually and meet their specific needs. Students complete activities in their own time and check in with me on their progress. This allows them to be motivated and engaged, even if they may have missed a day. These supplies will help me expand this project. I often record videos for my students to watch for more help, and having headphones available will allow them to view those in class and catch up with their classmates. The pH probes will be used for a hands-on student lesson about acids and bases, which will increase student engagement and excitement about chemistry. And the colored pencils will be used for students' "choice projects," which are projects they complete at the end of units to show their understanding of the topic. Giving students choice in how they show learning increases their motivation and buy-in to learning.
