Hip Hip Supplies !
Funded Sep 1, 2020This teaching year has been like no other. Due to Covid-19 students can no longer share every day materials like crayons, pencils, markers, and sharpeners that we usually do. For the safety of each student and to follow the protocol of staying feet apart all students needed their individual materials to use. This project has been so helpful and students use these materials each and every day. Students received their own individual pouch containing the materials that they will use each day. They were so excited to have their own pouch and each picked their favorite color. They loved that they each had their own crayon box with 24 different colors to choose from. In kindergarten it's important to teach students how to be independent and be responsible for their things. Students learned how to sharpen their own pencils and were so excited to be able to do it themselves. They took ownership of their materials and learned how to be responsible and care for their personal belongings.
Since receiving the supplies students have used their individual kits in many ways. They have had to transition many different times from in person learning to at home learning and one thing that was consistent was having their own individual pouch with the materials that they needed to complete their work. They use their individual materials in all subject areas. In writing students have created their own Pattern book. Using the pencils and crayons they illustrated and drew beautiful writing pieces. They used their dry erase markers to practicing letter writing and penmanship. Students who were learning how to hold a pencil to write used the pencil grips and have shown so much improvement in their writing. In Math students used the materials as counting tools. While learning how to count to 10 students counted their individual supplies and learned one to one correspondence. While learning addition they acted out word problems using the supplies in their pouch. In science students used their pencils and crayons to observe and record their findings.
My students are resilient and have taken this new way of learning in stride. They are still so happy learning whether in person or online and have shown so much growth and progress since the start the school year. In my class we will continue to learn and grow. In the upcoming units' students will be learning about change and how things change overtime. We will be reading stories about characters over coming obstacles and persevering through change. Students will be discussing their feelings and how they deal with problems. Using culturally response text the student will be able to see themselves in the characters and learn different ways to navigate through their feelings. I look forward to broadening their vocabulary and language through use of literacy and researching more developmentally appropriate text to help my students grow and learn academy and social emotionally.
I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to help my students during such a difficult time in the world. Thank you for your generous donations it has help my students learn and stay safe.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Rodriguez
