These students attend a full-time gifted class in an urban, public school district with 60% of its students on free and reduced lunch. There are certain challenges that sometimes come with being a gifted child. Our theme this year is failure. This may sound strange but, more often than not, these students paralyze themselves with perfectionism, fear of failure, or of not being smart enough. Believe it or not, focusing our intercurricular studies on rocketry is helping us overcome our fear of failure. Who has had bigger failures than NASA? But the reason they had colossal failures, was because they were taking colossal risks -they were trying to do something that had never been done before. They also learned from their mistakes. Instead of giving up when they failed, they took the attitude of that didn't work, let's try something else. More than anything, I want my students to embrace taking risks in education, and learning from failures rather than fearing them.
