  • Giving Kids Meaningful Speech

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

Thank you so much for providing me with this opportunity to participate in professional development for gestalt language processing. Since this is a new area that a lot of clinicians are only starting to be aware of, this professional development was extremely crucial for my practice with students who are gestalt language processors. I have learned about how children acquire natural language rather than analytic language, and how to mold my practice in order to foster more natural language growth with love and respect for my neurodivergent students rather than forcing compliance. I have also tried to share my knowledge with my colleagues as well as parents and they have been amazed at the progress they have been with the students as well. I will continue to be committed to my philosophy of making students feel safe and supported in the upcoming year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rina

  • Engaging Students With Interactive Resources Part 2!

    Funded Aug 27, 2021

Thank you so much for your incredible generosity! I was able to acquire new interactive PDFs, Google Slides, and Boom cards that I have been using in the speech room. I was also very fortunate since the school gave me a new smartboard and I was able to present the material on the smartboard for all the students to interact with. Students returned to the school building full-time this academic year and the readjustment has not been easy. But with the interactive materials, they have been better able to focus and participate in their speech and language activities.

During the holiday season, we read the book "Bear Says Thanks" by Karma Wilson. I love this book because we get to work on so many things: rhyming words, tier 2 vocabulary, story comprehension, story retelling, and social skills (sharing with friends, being grateful). We started by talking about our own holiday traditions, discussed the vocabulary, then read the book. After reading the book together, the students answered questions about the story and retold the story with support from a super cute and interactive set of Boom cards and graphic organizers. I am so thrilled to watch them be confident in their retelling of the story and I know this could not have happened without your help. So once again, thank you and we really appreciate your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rina

  • Engaging Students with Interactive Digital Resources!

    Funded Dec 27, 2020

Thank you for funding high-quality digital resources that I have been using to engage students during in-person as well as remote learning. Although learning has looked very different this year, I have definitely seen progress in my students' speech and language skills thanks to the interactive, hands-on activities that make students excited to learn.

We have been using these interactive resources for many purposes: learning about categories and identifying the correct categories that objects belong to, learning new thematic vocabulary about animals and things that happen on the farm, and answering wh-questions about a book after reading the story. As you can see, all of these resources have a lot of visual support built-in, in order to provide clues in other modalities for my students to utilize to help with their language acquisition and retention. No matter if the students are in the classroom or at home, they have been able to interact with the digital resources and love having responsibility and ownership of their answers.

I continue to teach with the belief that all students can succeed with the appropriate support that accommodates their learning abilities and styles. And especially in an unconventional year like this, this important work cannot be done without the continued support of donors like you. My students and I truly appreciate the material provided by your generosity, and I know that my little scholars will continue to grow. Once again, thank you so much for supporting my students during this school year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rina

  • Staying Safe and Healthy in Speech Therapy!

    Funded Sep 28, 2020

Thank you for funding supplies for cleaning and safety for my students who have been attending school in-person. We started off the year by having students attend 2-3 days a week and have been able to expand in-person learning days to 5 days a week in order to provide more consistency for our students and their families. And we have been able to achieve that safely thanks to your generous donations. Students are thrilled to be having their own personal supplies, taking ownership and responsibilities for themselves. Even my younger students have been doing well in following safety guidelines, such as washing their hands, keeping their masks on, and protecting and cleaning their own markers and folders.

We had been discussing how to describe characters and items, by naming their categories, qualities, functions, and locations, etc. We worked on each of these attributes one at a time with a lot of visual support and sentence frames to help my students expand their thoughts and sentences. They really enjoyed using markers to fill in the sentences and it helped them take ownership of their own learning! As they gained competence in these skills, they had been able to consolidate descriptions of these various attributes to describe characters and objects in books that we read together.

Once again, thank you so much for supporting my students during this school year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rina

As we prepare for the new school year, the major concern students, parents, and teachers have is how to keep everyone healthy and the classroom clean and virus free. In the upcoming blended model of learning, we are now bracing for a plethora of new and unexpected difficulties. Since I see different groups of students for speech and language therapy throughout the day, it is essential for me to acquire individual supplies to engage all students safely. This project is to help fund cleaning products and materials necessary to follow the safety guidelines set forth by health experts. The non-contact thermometer ensures a germ-free environment in the classroom. The face shields, masks, and gloves will be used by all occupants of the classroom to ensure safety guidelines are being followed. The Clorox wipes will be used to wipe down all surfaces, classroom supplies, and doorknobs daily. Hand sanitizer will be used to clean our hands as each group enters and leaves the classroom. The plastic envelopes, sheet protectors, and dry erase markers will be used to separate instructional materials such as worksheets and graphic organizers into individual bags for each student to work on. Your donations to this project will allow me to keep the classroom germ-free and everyone protected during the school year.
