Teaching in the heart of Western Montana has been the most fulfilling experience. At our school the children are eager to learn, curious, kind, and empathetic. They love to read, and they become wide-eyed when I open a picture book with beautiful colors. These students are attentive and want to learn more about the social justice movements they hear their parents and news articles discuss. The school is located in the south hills neighborhood of Missoula and caters to roughly 500 students with a variety of backgrounds. While these students get to enjoy the most incredible scenery and colorful surroundings, our school community consists mostly of Caucasian students with a small percentage of other ethnicity classifications including, but not limited to American Indian students. Missoula is located close to Native American reservations and our city is home to many American Indians. Additionally, Missoula has a refugee program and continues to work toward a more diverse population. This project will support my students learning about different cultures around the world by granting them access to books that discuss the people in our city, community, and classrooms. This will further support their understanding of themselves as well as their peers.
