"I hate reading." That statement is something I hear daily and it breaks my heart. Literature is supposed to be enjoyable! You read books at the beach, or on a raining day, or if you just need an escape from reality. I want to be able to let my students experience the joy that novels can bring into their lives. Novels that represent diverse cultures are a trending topic right now and it is a shame that it has to be in order to get them into students hands. Readers know that the books you love are the ones that you can connect with. Students don't want to read books written a hundred years ago with characters they can't relate to and they shouldn't have to. We have amazing authors today and I want to show my students why reading is enjoyable. This project allows me to give students options on novels to read that are written by authors from various backgrounds and have characters that look like them and face the challenges they face. We will use these novels to host literary circles where students will have inspired discussions while completing assignments related to the reading and writing standards. These will first be used in my AP Literature class, which gives my students a chance to receive college credit while in high school and it saves them money when they get to college. My other classes will use these novels as a way to show them that educational reading does not equal boring reading. My goal is to have my students finally say they found a novel that they love!
