Our school is in a high poverty area, and now that the pandemic has taken over our lives, we are more in need of even the most basic supplies. We are a hybrid school where students attend class one day face to face and do distance learning the next day. If forced to return to distance learning, students can take their supplies home and work from there. The items I have ordered are supplies that I can use to implement hands-on differentiated learning for many different projects/assignments, not just one project. I teach Special Education and many of my students do not grasp concepts or excel by completing only paper and pencil assignments. Because of this, I incorporate hands-on projects to increase their ability to learn. Please continue reading to examine the many ways that your donations will improve learning!
Using highlighters, I will teach students to locate the main idea in a reading passage, find evidence to support an idea in literature, and color code math problems. Pencils and color pencils can be used for writing, finding textual evidence, and for labeling assignments. For hands-on activities, card stock and scissors work well for creating 3-D math shapes and for many other hands-on projects. Colored folders keep A and B day student assignments separate, and earbuds allow students who struggle with a focus to stay on task. I also like to incorporate music and short educational videos to enhance my lessons for those students who are visual/auditory learners. Lastly, dry erase markers and personal whiteboards can be used to work math problems, to illustrate a concept, for short assessments, etc.
