I am the Intellectual Impairment Strand Specialist at the Conley School in Boston. Our strand of three substantially separate classrooms consists of 36 students with a variety of special needs from kindergarten through sixth grade. Remote learning is very difficult for our students and I’m hoping to make their experience this fall much better with materials best suited for their learning styles. With many of my students learning readiness skills we have had a very hard time teaching effectively with a computer being the only resource sent home. They were are barely able to access these computers even with the amazing support from their families. In the next few weeks, I am hoping to create portable learning stations for each of our students. These stations would include a bin filled with materials for our students to use at home. This bin would include hands-on materials such as math manipulatives, sensory learning materials, sets of various flash cards, art supplies and other traditional school supplies. These bins will enable and encourage the diverse learning experiences they are used to in the classroom. Please help our students with special needs be as successful as possible during this difficult time of uncertainty.
