In my classroom the use of manipulatives is daily especially in math! Using manipulatives gives my students the opportunity to see and manipulate math in a new perspective. Manipulatives allow students to work hands-on with math strategies that are being taught. As 1st graders my students, are learning the basics of math. In order for students to fully comprehend math concepts there are 3 stages: concrete, representational, and then abstract. In my classroom I start teaching each concept in the concrete stage, this stage involves students manipulating objects to solve a math problem. They NEED these manipulatives to explore, solve, create and understand math concepts even the simplest ones. At home without the opportunity to have a physical teacher support them, it is even more important to provide students with these tools to ensure their success in grasping math concepts. I plan to send these manipulatives home in activity packs, so that my students are able to fully engage in math lessons. Manipulatives intrigue and motivate while helping students learn.
