Reach for Reading is a family literacy program at our elementary school designed for EL students and their families. Our program is held one evening each month. Our focus includes math literacy, using school supplies, using new technology, letter writing, reading with your child, and playing games to support math and literacy. We include visits to the public library and presentations by representatives from the community (sports team coordinators, park rangers, nurses, local theatre talent, etc.). We help parents take over as academic coaches for their children. Families take home all materials used in the activities at each meeting. These include basic school supplies, books, journals and academic games. In the midst of a pandemic, and with the challenges of distance learning, it is imperative that we continue to provide opportunities for our parents to work together with their children while learning to use the technology involved as well as strategies and skills in reading and math. Our goal is to hold virtual monthly meetings where we will model technology use, curriculum-based activities and assist parents as they guide and support their children at work. We plan to make sure each EL family receives the school supplies and books needed to engage in the virtual monthly meeting. We also plan to continue to invite and introduce representatives from the community to provide updates on our "new normal" and share resources available to our community. Finally, we plan to host virtual visits to the library and/or local recreation centers. Please help us with our efforts to make sure our EL families feel included, feel heard and feel prepared to continue their involvement in the education of their children! Help us continue this program, as it is a vital link between EL families, the school, and the community.
