During the school year, my students study ancient history. A large part of the year, I have my students engaged in Project-Based Learning. The first project we do is on Archaeoastronomy, which combines Hawaiian culture, ancient history, astronomy, and art. The goal of this unit is for my students to understand how ancient cultures built structures (such as Stonehenge) to understand their natural surroundings and tell time.
My kids will use the art materials purchased through Donors Choose to create artwork from home. The three main art pieces in this project will be a watercolor for the cover of a journal, a colored drawing that depicts an 'Oloelo No'eau (a Hawaiian proverb about the seasons) and a One Pager (an infographic) about the Archaeoastronomy site.
More specifically, in a series of lessons I will have students use the art supplies to create a "One Pager"; this is an artistic infographic that includes a decorative hand drawn border, several illustrations and hand lettering.
Learning outcomes include not only the factual knowledge that they gain from their research, but also how to display their knowledge on a neat, attention grabbing infographic.
By creating artwork that depicts Archaeoastronomy sites, students better understand how these structures were engineered and how they help to mark celestial bodies.
I love how the topic combines history, art, science.
Whether my students are learning at home or at school this year, sharing supplies will not be an option. I would love to be able to put together kits of art materials that kids can use for projects.
