We are facing a big challenge this year as our Public Developmental Preschool begins online due to Covid-19. Our preschoolers with special needs do not learn by sitting in front of a computer screen. Our preschoolers require hands-on projects and activities that they can do at home with their families while we learn at a distance. While the teachers provide lessons and learning projects virtually, many of our families do not have materials at home that allow them to fully participate in the lessons offered. Without the proper materials, some families are at a great disadvantage. Children cannot practice cutting without scissors. They cannot complete the literacy project that we demonstrate without writing supplies.
In order for our distance learning program to be accessible and equitable for all of our preschoolers with special needs, we must supply materials to every family in our program that will engage children in the hands-on learning aligned with our curriculum. By donating to this project, you are providing families the materials they need to engage their child, in our preschool learning program. We are requesting 3 types of materials: 1) preschool basics (glue, scissors, paints, sidewalk chalk, tape) 2) craft materials (jigsaw puzzle kits, wooden materials, beads, clay, etc.) 3) science materials (geodes for "rock week", nets and magnifying glasses, plastic bottles for experiments, etc.). These materials, combined with our online teaching, allow hands-on practice in areas such as fine-motor development, pre-literacy development, counting and pre-math skills, imitation skills, and sequencing skills. Thank you for giving our youngest and neediest learners equal opportunities to access our hands-on distance learning program during Covid-19.
