I will be making sturdy adapted educational materials, such as flashcards, lessons, and worksheets, as well as communication boards for students with ASD who have significant communication deficits. Therapeutic lesson plans will target using total communication including verbal and/or nonverbal modalities such as verbalizations, gestures, signs, and pointing to low tech communication systems. The goal is for students to be able to use all available modalities to communicate their wants and needs, express thoughts and ideas, and participate in both academic and social communication experiences. In addition, having materials available at home will be beneficial for carrying over communication skills from the school to the home by training parents and other family members. These materials are intended to support functional communication, including verbal and nonverbal modalities, during academic and home activities, more specifically during distance learning. Given the severity of the needs of some children, distance learning on the computer needs to be supplemented by physical instruction. I intend to educate and train families on how to use these communication systems at home in order for speech/language interventions to be more effective.
