  • Learning in a Calm, Peaceful Classroom

    My students love the calm ambience my classroom now has due to the lights. They always tell me, "I love coming in your room; it's so calming."

    Every Friday, we use computers, and we turn off all the lights and learn with just the floor lamps and small lamps. The first day I put the floor lamps out, students took turns playing with the light settings- changing the colors and the patterns- and they were so excited.

    The light covers have really helped, too, because when I do turn on the lights, the lights are not glaring.

    Students and I are getting less headaches due to the lights not being so bright.

  • Engaging with Writing Means Excelling at Writing!

    My students were so excited to receive these materials today. Straight away, right after I opened the materials, students worked on using these charts and markers to create compound and complex sentences. Students worked in groups to come up with their own sentences. Then, other students went around each chart to find the conjunctions in the sentences. Instead of students just taking notes and listening to me, they were all actively engaged in the lesson, learning from each other. They used the sticky notes and pens to write down their answers. Thank you! We will do many more group work projects to practice writing and grammar skills.”

    I have already implemented using the whiteboards in grammar lessons.

    For this lesson, we practiced writing out compound and complex sentences. Students circled the conjunctions (whether they were subordinating conjunctions or coordinating conjunctions), and they practiced building sentences.

    They were able to see comma placement easily, and it was easier for them to identify dependent and independent clauses, too.

    Students were so excited to complete the task this, not the boring pencil and paper way!

I strive to create an engaging reading environment where I have varied reading materials for my students. I also love to teach about events going on in the world and bring a thematic approach to my teaching. Students will use the Scholastic magazines to practice opinion writing and readers' responses and to analyze the texts for reading skills such as text structure and tone. Scholastic creates rigorous and engaging texts which will help my students improve their reading and writing skills. The new books will be for them to enjoy during their daily independent reading time. I promote reading by having my students write weekly readers' responses to me as though we are pen pals. I get to know them as readers, and I am able to create a bond with them. We will have great things to talk about through these reading materials.
