Many of our students need sensory supports in order to thrive in the classroom setting. The Covid-19 pandemic was a stressful time for everyone including our students and having access to supports in the classroom is essential to help our students self-regulate in order learn and grow. The sensory items requested will be used to help students self-regulate and access tools in the classroom. Some students require alternative seating, some require oral input, and some students need fidgets to in order self-regulate. The rocking chair allows for vestibular input and movement, the bean bag chair will provide alternative seating and proprioceptive input, sensory chews will provide students with a safe and appropriate option for chewing, and fidgets will help our OT department support students who use fidgets to help them focus on what is going on around them. When students are regulated, have their needs met and have the tools they need to succeed, they are are able to put all their energy into learning and participating in the classroom. Due to distance learning, there were limited opportunities to work on fine motor skills needed for handwriting due to finite resources. The putty will be used to help support hand strength and fine motor skills in a variety of ways in the OT room and in the classroom. Many of our students are motivated to write when provided with alternatives to a regular pencil. The triangle grip pencil helps a student's pencil grasp and the erasable pens allow students who love writing with pens a chance to write with a pen and edit when needed.
