This year I would like to diversify my books to represent the beautiful ethnicities and cultures my students come from. Shontaye Glover, a speech-language pathologist, has presented on diversifying books and has identified great books that represent children from a variety of backgrounds including: Black, Asian, Latinx, Middle Eastern, and Russian characters. These books are from her recommended list that I hope would help mirror my students' heritages, so they can see themselves as important and relevant. I will use these diverse and representative books during distance learning along with some puppets that are very engaging. Children this age (3-5 years old) are easily distracted, especially when I am not in their physical presence. Puppets, such as the ones I have identified, are intriguing and pull the children into the screen. Though I do use digital materials as well, I think that real materials presented on camera is a more engaging way to work with the students, and a welcome break from the usual screen time. So I would like to use real books and toys, rather than digital books and games, so these books and puppets would really help me work with the kids by honoring their backgrounds and also making them interested and excited to learn.
