Let's keep the arts alive in our virtual classrooms, especially those schools who serve low-income families! My school has been proudly serving economically disadvantaged students from East San Jose since 2012, and will continue to do so in a distance learning setting this year. Bringing home a new set of art supplies and creating with them may be one of the most exciting moments my students experience this school year. By receiving these items my students will be able to own a set of watercolors, color pencils, a sharpie and watercolor paper. They will use these materials to participate in a variety of art lessons at home. For example, students will use their colored pencils and sharpies to first learn how to draw Baymax from Big Hero 6 and then create their own original superheroes. In a self-portrait project, students will explore different watercolor techniques to show movement, expression, and symbolism while reflecting on their own identities. I have found that the arts support the social and emotional development of a child. During these unprecedented times, I hope these materials will provide my middle school students an outlet to express their feelings and better understand the world around them.
