Using paper cutouts have enabled students to grasp molecular processes faster and deeper. Students had difficulties understanding connections between DNA, proteins, genes and genotypes. Students create DNA, do replication, transcription of RNA, translation to assemble amino acids into proteins, observe where mutations come from and how they’re passed on. We try doing meiosis with pipe cleaners or beads, but it’s hard to understand the concept of crossing over without proper shapes and components. This lesson would be better with 3-D components to connect meiosis with genotypes. It’s better for students to work with their own models than to observe a demonstration on the board.
