Building a strong foundation in literacy in the primary grades is critical. This year, we will be learning in an ever changing landscape and we are determined to give all of our students every opportunity for growth whether they are learning from home or in our socially-distanced classrooms...we can overcome these challenges! Our 2nd grade team uses the Orton-Gillingham method, which is a teaching approach designed for reading and spelling instruction. It is explicit, systematic, sequential and multi-sensory in nature. It is an excellent methodology for teaching reading and spelling and effectively reaches all learners. With this method, we will be doing activities such as writing in sand, using "bumpy paper" to feel a new sight word, and learning to pound and tap syllables and sounds to become better readers and writers. By donating to this project, you will help supply our students with the tools they need to learn through this proven instructional method whether they are at home or in school. In school, these tools are shared and utilized during small group reading instruction...but that has all changed. We now need to provide these tools to all 2nd graders to use while doing remote learning at home. Students who have access to these tools will be more likely to experience success with their reading acquisition. While our learning embarks on a new adventure this coming year, enabling families the opportunity to make learning at home doable and fun will greatly enhance our students ability to grow and learn in this new world education.
