Keep Kids Warm With Winter Hats & Gloves
Funded Jan 28, 2025Thank you SO much! Because of your generosity I was able to give a brand new winter and gloves to each of my 36 students. They were SO excited! There was a lot of cheering!
Because your donations arrived so quickly, less than an hour after I posted the request, I was able to give these items to the students during the cold winter weather. We just had snow and are predicted to get more snow and cold temperatures this year. These winter hats and gloves came at the right time and will help so much!
Thank you!!!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Wallen
News for Ms. Wallen & Mrs. Rodriguez's 5th Grade Classes!
Funded Sep 9, 2020Thank you so much for your very quick and generous donation. I can't tell you how touched I was that so many of you were willing to help my students in this way. Thanks to your donation Mrs. Rodriguez and I were able to start the year of remote learning with Scholastic News as a part of our online learning curriculum. In addition to the current issues of Scholastic News our online subscription opens up the Scholastic News database to us so we are able to search keywords and read previous issues. This has been enormously helpful in filling in teaching US History.
My school district does not have a textbook for social studies for grade 5. So as a teacher, I am always hunting around in search of ways to teach such a vital topic with socially aware material that is also at the right reading level for my students. I was so happy to find that Scholastic News had tons of social studies articles in it! We read a whole article about the Revolutionary War, including about African American soldiers on both sides of the fight in the war. Students not only got to read this information, but have a username and password to access the articles on their own computer not just have me yet again screen-share photographs of a book on a PowerPoint.
Students actually like Scholastic News and get to read online right along with me. Students are able to read in tandem on their own screen as I read off mine over TEAMS or read on their own when not on TEAMS. Students have been engaged by the short video clips that Scholastic News creates to go along with their articles as well. Just this last week students read the recent issue titled, "Should Kids Be Allowed to Buy Junk Food." This article discussed how some states in Mexico are considering banning kids from buying junk food by making an age requirement for buying items deemed junk food. Students were engaged in reading this article as it directly linked to the nutritional health unit, they are studying in P.E. Without Scholastic News I wouldn't have had the resource to further student learning on this topic.
Thank you again for your donation. Thank you for supporting my classroom and Mrs. Rodriguez's classroom in reading about important issues. Thank you for helping us during the unprecedented time of remote learning. Scholastic News has been a major game changer in our remote learning classrooms. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Wallen
