Variety, choice, and a range of levels help promote independent reading. In a classroom that is striving to maintain careful social distancing and hygiene protocols, it is important for students to have enough books to read from. This year students will not be able to browse the classroom library or return their books to the library immediately after reading them. I will provide my students with a choice of books within their levels and interests, and then hand each of them a book they choose. This will eliminate student browsing and prevent multiple students from touching a single book. Books will also be quarantined for a period of time before another student is allowed to read the book. This is why it is imperative to have a large number and variety of books, so students can have a positive daily independent reading experience. Individual dry erase boards are an important way for students to demonstrate their knowledge. They are also fun and engaging for students! During math workshop, students practice problem solving and computation on their whiteboards. They can then hold up their whiteboards, so I can assess their understanding while maintaining social distancing. I can then use appropriate strategies to best help students build upon their learning.
