The Juniors in my class need new and better books. Not only are our old books falling apart, but our curriculum needs an upgrade! In my school's integrated humanities courses, we use literature as a lens for understanding critical issues in US History. However, the dilapidated books on our shelves fail to offer an engaging, ambitious, and uplifting narrative that can help students relate to the experiences of immigrant families, workers, and community organizers who built our industrial cities. Help me provide my students with copies of Thomas Bell's Out of This Furnace, a beautifully crafted and intimate account that brings this past to life. Now more than ever, students need well-told stories that speak to the issues that affect them in the present and that convey a sense of hope in civic action. I have seen how eager my students are to engage with the problems of new industry and labor, of environmental collapse and public health, of immigration, community, and identity - concerns that are central to Out of This Furnace. This new set of books will provide my students with a hopeful and absorbing narrative about the struggles of working families in a time of turbulence and transformation.
