Books are such an incredibly powerful tool in expanding young peoples' worlds. As a speech therapist, I use a different book each week as a platform to teach a new speech sound, a lesson in grammar, to introduce new vocabulary, or to teach a new social skill. Books are my jumping off point to teach students about the world around them. Not only do stories serve as mirrors where students learn about their own realities, but they also serve as windows to the realities' of others. The students I serve are predominantly white and the majority of them are provided with free and reduced lunch. That being said, their access to diverse individuals in real life and in narratives is often limited. I would like to fill my shelves with diverse stories that build up students' literacy skills, build up students' perspectives, and build up students' realities. Thank you for helping me do the work!
