Making Learning Math Feel Like Playing Games
Funded Feb 5, 2022Thank you so much for making it possible to purchase so many new math games for my 7th graders this year! As part of my classroom management routine, I award points daily to each class based on their participation and behavior as a whole. The points are cashed in for marbles (3 points per marble) and the marbles are then put into a quart jar that the student watch fill up. They get so excited to help put the marbles in the jar because they know that when the jar is full, it means that they get a math party with math games and treats!
The new math games purchased from your donations brought new life into our math parties. They allowed the students to feel like they were playing when they were actually practicing math skills. One of the games the students really enjoyed was the Real-World Math Unexpected Events: Applying Math Concepts to Everyday Life. They were able to use adding negative and positive numbers to keep their "Checkbooks" balanced as they "experienced" different real situations that happen in life. It was very fun to hear them talk and play as they were practicing these necessary math skills.
The two different equation balances were also big hits. The students were able to visually see how to solve equations and then do hands-on practice with the techniques and solving procedure steps they were learning how to do on paper. This was so helpful for all the students -- those who understood the concept quickly as well as those who needed to see it multiple times. Everyone benefited from these teaching tools. They made learning math easier and much more fun!
Thanks to your generosity, my classroom was a place of math learning and FUN!”

Math Class Incentives and iPad Mic for Recording Class Discussions
Funded Feb 16, 2022Thank you so much for your contributions to my math classroom. The many different incentives that you helped me purchase gave my students instant rewards for hard work and learning. They really enjoyed the puzzle erasers the most! They were a very sought-after item that the students felt were worth working for! They loved participating in class discussions and different math challenges to be able to earn the chance to pick out a prize from the prize drawers.
The iPad mic was also very helpful as it allowed me to create better recordings of my class during class discussions and lessons. I participated in the TeachFX program that allows teachers to record lessons and then look at the analysis of how much teacher vs student talk happened. The new iPad mic gave me better recordings and more accurate reports from TeachFX. This helped me to be able to make adjustments to my teaching style to allow the students to participate even more in the discussions/lessons.
With more class participation, more students were successful in learning math this year. It has been a very different and difficult year for many students; but thanks to your generosity, many students benefitted and found better success than they thought possible.”

Digital Tools for In-class and At-home Learning
Funded Sep 16, 2020Thank you so much for helping me provide digital tools for my 137 7th-grade math students. These tools have really enhanced learning math. With your generous funds, I have been able to buy digital tools that allow not only my students who are able to attend my in-person classes to enjoy learning in new and fun formats but it has allowed my at-home quarantined students to still participate in learning math with the new, fun and creative ways provided by the digital tools you helped me buy.
In the pictures provided, you can see the students working their way through a math maze and scavenger hunt by solving the equations as they go. They really liked these projects as they allowed them to show their work on the computer using the Kami annotating tool and Google Slides while they worked their way through the digital Mazes and Scavenger Hunts (just two of the many programs purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers that your funds helped pay for). The students enjoyed practicing in these new formats rather than just the "boring worksheets" that they do not like to do.
The students made comments like, "Let's do more of these!" and "This is fun!" Comments like these are a math teacher's dream come true! They were enjoying learning and practicing math! I loved it also as it allowed me to see their progress in learning how to solve equations quickly and give them guiding feedback where it was needed to help those who were still struggling.
I am so grateful for these tools as they have increased student engagement and learning. The students are having fun learning math!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. McCann
